The Center Of Hope

In our community there is only one place children who suffer from Down Syndrome can go to
and that is the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation Klang Centre.

Many parents call it “Centre of Hope”.

The Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation Klang Center has been serving the community since 1994.

At KDSF Klang Centre, two programmes offered:

  1. Infant Stimulation Programme (2 months to 2 years)

  2. Early Intervention Programme (3 to 6 years)

Today, there are about 60 students that rely on the center and six teachers who conduct one-to-one sessions. Parents are asked to attend the lessons along with their children to understand what is being taught. Weekly tuition is also available for children aged seven years and above.

A lending library is available so parents can borrow materials and continue the learning process at home.

The monthly fee is RM200 per child but as many parents are from the B40 income group, they pay as much as they can afford, with a minimum fee of RM10.

As such, the center collects only about RM3,000 to RM4,000 a month but needs RM22,000 per month to run. This difference is made through donations and fundraising activities oranised by the Kiwanis Club of Klang.

The centre also works closely with Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah. Whenever the hospital encounters a Down Syndrome child, they will contact KDSF. The centre also organises a monthly meeting so they can share ideas and tips with medical personnel at the hospital.

About Down syndrome

Down syndrome is a chromosomal condition caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome. It is named after John Langdon Down, the British physician who described the syndrome in 1866.

In Malaysia one birth out of every 700 has Down Syndrome. It is a genetic disorder that cannot be cured. Individuals with Down syndrome tend to have particular set of facial characteristics, a lower-than-average cognitive ability and impairment to physical growth which often ranges from mild to moderate disabilities.

Early childhood intervention, screening for common problems, medical treatment where indicated, a conducive family environment, and vocational training can improve the overall development of children with Down syndrome.

Education and proper care will improve quality of life significantly, despite genetic limitations.
