The Center Of Hope

Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation Klang Centre

Changing the lives of children with Down syndrome

In Malaysia one birth out of every 700 has Down syndrome. It is a genetic disorder and cannot be cured. However these children can be taught and lead productive and happy lives.

Yes we have all been blessed that our families are healthy and normal. However there are many families in our Klang Community who have to cope with children who are born with this disorder. It is devastating to them.

These children come to us with very little in the way of speaking skills, writing skills and gross motor control.

Your sponsorship is what keeps our center going.

In our community there is only one place children who suffer from Down syndrome can go to and that is the Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation Klang Centre. Many parents call it “Centre of Hope”

About Down Syndrome

Down syndrome is a chromosomal condition caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 21st chromosome. It is named after John Langdon Down, the British physician who described the syndrome in 1866.

In Malaysia one birth out of every 700 has Down syndrome. It is a genetic disorder that cannot be cured. Individuals with Down syndrome tend to have particular set of facial characteristics, a lower-than-average cognitive ability and impairment to physical growth which often ranges from mild to moderate disabilities.

Early childhood intervention, screening for common problems, medical treatment where indicated, a conducive family environment, and vocational training can improve the overall development of children with Down syndrome.

Education and proper care will improve quality of life significantly, despite genetic limitations.
